At Old Newton Under Fives, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum set out by the government for all early years providers (0-5 years) to ensure ‘all children learn and develop well and are kept safe’ (Department for Education). This curriculum is followed through into the children’s reception year at primary school where there are 17 Early Learning Goals to aim for. Within this framework there are 3 sections:

  • Characteristics of Effective Learning (CoEL)
  • 3 Prime areas of learning
  • 4 Specific areas of learning

We use Birth to Five Matters guidance to track the development of children at our setting, as we find this allows us to celebrate more of the smaller steps in each child’s development, rather than just the big milestones.

Our practice is based on a variety of educational pedagogies, including “In the Moment”, Curiosity Approach and Reggio Emilio. Using these pedagogies as a guideline, we then use our knowledge of each individual child to build and extend their development while doing something the child is interested in. We are very much child led with a great routine, structure and boundaries.

Long term overview

We use the following outline as guidance for what we teach and when with the children at our setting. However, our priority is to meet the needs and interests of all children who attend, so is subject to change dependent on this.
